How it works
From your first sign-up to your first dashboard, step by step.
Here's exactly what happens after you start — what we ask for, what you authorize, and how long each part typically takes.
Step by step
The full timeline
- 1
Create your account
Set up a secure Topaz Ocean account with your email and a password. This takes under a minute and does not require any tax information yet.
- 2
Pay for your Initial IRS Review
A single $299 payment starts the review. There is no recurring charge attached to the review itself — Ongoing Monitoring is a separate, optional subscription that begins later.
- 3
Share your taxpayer details
We collect the identifying information the IRS requires to locate an account: full legal name, Social Security number or ITIN, date of birth, and current address.
- 4
Authorize us with the IRS
You sign a limited, read-only authorization. It permits us to request and view your account records. It does not grant authority to change anything, sign on your behalf, or represent you in a dispute.
- 5
We obtain your IRS records
If you already have transcripts saved, you can upload them directly for the fastest start. Otherwise, requesting them from the IRS through the authorized channel typically takes a few business days.
- 6
We review what we find
Every transcript gets parsed and cross-checked, then organized by tax year into balance, filing status, notices, and relevant dates.
- 7
Your dashboard is ready
You get a single view of your IRS standing. From this point forward, Ongoing Monitoring begins automatically and checks your account on a regular basis.
Key takeaways
- Account creation and payment take just a few minutes.
- Uploading existing transcripts skips the IRS request step entirely.
- Requesting records directly from the IRS typically takes a few business days.
- Your dashboard and Ongoing Monitoring both begin the moment the review is complete.
Timing
How long each step takes
Account creation, payment, and sharing your taxpayer details are typically done in one sitting — most people finish that portion in under ten minutes. The step that varies is obtaining your records: if you upload transcripts you already have, we can start reviewing immediately. If we need to request them from the IRS on your behalf, plan on a few business days before that data is available.
What's next
After your dashboard is ready
Once your Initial IRS Review is complete, your dashboard shows your balance by tax year, your filing status across recent years, and any notices on file. Ongoing Monitoring then takes over automatically, checking your account on a regular basis and updating your dashboard when something changes — so you are not left re-running the same review manually every few months.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do I need any documents ready before I start?+
No documents are required to begin. If you happen to have existing IRS transcripts saved, uploading them speeds up the process, but it is entirely optional.
What if the IRS request takes longer than expected?+
Processing times can vary. If your request is taking longer than the typical few business days, your dashboard will reflect that your records are still pending.
Can I stop the process after authorizing access?+
Yes. You can revoke your authorization at any time from your account settings, which stops any further record requests.
